What began in Libya and Egypt is now reaching Israel as well, as Muslims go on rock-throwing sprees and tried to attack the US embassy here too:

Jerusalem police clashed with hundreds of Muslim youth Friday after they stormed out of prayers atop the Temple Mount in the direction of the Damascus Gate. Police said the rioters were on their way to the US consulate, presumably to protest against a film denigrating the Prophet Mohammad, which has already sparked mass protests in Libya, Egypt and Yemen, resulting in the deaths of four Americans.

The youths threw stones at the police officers, who responded by firing stun grenades to disperse the rioters.

A number of officers were lightly injured from smoke inhalation. Forces arrested four of the rioters.

Police were prepared for the possibility of riots in Jerusalem, as Border Police and other patrol units fanned out across the Old City ahead of traditional Friday prayers.

Despite an awareness of potential violence, police did not announced restricted access to the Temple Mount. Often if serious rioting is anticipated only men over age 40 are allowed to enter.

In a rare move, the US State Department on Thursday issued a travel warning for Jerusalem, urging American citizens to “defer nonessential travel and exercise caution.”

Also Thursday, around 50 activists gathered outside the US Embassy in Tel Aviv, chanting “God is Great” and waving the green flags of the Israel Islamic Movement. Attorney Zahi Nujeidat, spokesman for the group, said that the protesters came from across Israel to the embassy to “express our rage about this despicable movie that has harmed the honor of our prophet.”

It's good if the police here were prepared for what could happen. However, their failure to place an age restriction at the Temple Mount was definitely ill-advised.

The protests began peacefully with several hundred people demonstrating on the plaza that holds both the Al-Aqsa and Dome of the Rock mosques, chanting, "With our blood and our soul, we will sacrifice for you our Prophet."

But clashes broke out between a part of the crowd and Israeli police as the demonstration moved out of the Old City, with security forces firing tear gas and stun grenades that injured at least five people, an AFP correspondent said. Several policemen were reportedly hurt.

How can it be "peaceful" if they said they're willing to self-sacrifice, to say nothing of trashing their own futures?

In Gaza, thousands of people rallied at demonstrations in Gaza City and the southern town of Rafah, a day after the ruling Hamas party urged citizens to turn out for protests after Friday prayers.

Protesters waved the flags of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements, and set fire to American flags, chanting "Death, death to America, death, death to Israel."

If there's no embassies in the Gaza strip, there's a reason for that.

Now, a U.S. intelligence bulletin, issued by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, warns that such extremist violence could become a domestic problem as well. While the bulletin makes no mention of specific threats, ABC News notes it does caution first responders to be "aware of the potential for spontaneous large crowds and protests that could overwhelm resources." Personnel should also "be vigilant for possible efforts to encourage peaceful protesters to commit acts of violence." "Additionally," the bulletin continues, "we judge that violent extremist groups in the United States could exploit anger over the film to advance their recruitment efforts." "Although there has been no violent reaction to the film in the Homeland thus far," a copy of the bulletin obtained by CNN states, "the risk of violence could increase both at home and abroad as the film continues to gain attention." According to ABC News, the warning also requested "faith-based organizations to promptly report suspicious activities that could indicate pre-operational plotting against Jewish, Coptic, Islamic, or any other faith-based communities."

Dror Eydar's written about a conference he took part in about Jewish refugees from Arabic-Islamic countries, whom nobody at the UN's ever asked be compensated for the horrifying abuse they received in past periods in their former residences before being violently exiled:

At the beginning of the week I had the chance to take part in a rare historic event: the first official conference on the issue of Jewish refugees, held under the auspices of Israel's Foreign Ministry in cooperation with the World Jewish Congress. The international conference was titled "Justice for Jewish Refugees From Arab Countries." For the first time in decades, the call for justice for the Jewish people was once again heard in Jerusalem. Not just a call for security, or apologetic Israeli discourse in the face of Palestinian calls for so-called justice, but a clear call, by Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to bring the issue of Jewish refugees back into every international arena: the ethical, legal, diplomatic and political arenas.

As one of the conference participants, former Canadian Minister of Justice Professor Irwin Cotler, said: “Where there is no remembrance, there is no truth; where there is no truth, there will be no justice; where there is no justice, there will be no reconciliation; and where there is no reconciliation, there will be no peace – which we all seek.” Indeed, this is a serious issue that has been neglected and kept silent for years, in stark contrast with the Palestinian refugee issue, which has become self evident and universally recognized in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Palestinians have become experts at marketing their victimhood to the world, and thus, the concept of a “just solution” became unilaterally linked to the Palestinian narrative. But just like every aspect of the Middle East story, here, too, the truth is far more complex.

With the exception of a few years prior to World War I, the Arabs living in this region never accepted the Jewish presence here. They rejected the various partition plans, ranging from the Peel Commission in 1937, through the 1947 Partition Plan, to the Oslo Accords and other generous Israeli offers. They were always willing to accept land, but never to sign a final agreement that would spell the end of the conflict.

One killed, KFC torched in Lebanon protest over anti-Islam film, pope

Protesters chanted against Pope Benedict’s visit to Lebanon and shouting anti-American slogans.
A security source said the man was killed as protesters tried to storm a government building. Earlier, a U.S. fast food restaurant was set alight. Twelve members of the security forces were wounded by stones thrown by protesters, the source said.
